A flat rack is usually for the transportation or storage of cargo with unique dimensions. Flat racks only have sides on the short side of the container, the bulkheads, so the cargo can stick out the side of the container during transportation.

Fixed-end and collapsible flat racks
In addition to flat racks being available in two dimensions, there are also two different types. Fixed end flat racks and collapsible flat racks.
A fixed end flat rack has fixed ends on the short sides. As fixed end flat racks are often stronger in construction, they can endure a greater top loads.
A collapsible flat rack has sides that can be collapsed so the empty container can be shipped more efficiently. 4 collapsible flat racks would take the same amount of space as 1 regular dry van container!
